Microsoft PerformancePoint Server application discontinued
How does the Microsoft announcement to discontinue PerformancePoint Server as an enterprise performance management application affect PerformancePlus customers?
For a short period of time some users and ICT departments were confused as to whether Microsoft were offering PerformancePoint Server as their own Enterprise Performance Management application, in competition with packages such as PerformancePlus.
In fact INPHASE and Microsoft had a close dialogue on the two applications and were clear that PerformancePoint Server and PerformancePlus were not competitive, but that the PerformancePoint Server features could be complementary to the PerformancePlus application for some user requirements.
This difference in capabilities is one of the reasons that Microsoft selected PerformancePlus to be the performance management application within Microsoft's Citizen Service Platform.
Microsoft have clarified their strategy and are consolidating some of the technology of PerformancePoint Server in to the Share Point Server, and stopping development of other application features after the July 2009 Service Pack 3 release.
This partly reflects the experience that a separate additional cost for the analytical and score-carding features that PerformancePoint Server could provide, delivered through SharePoint Server, led to a higher cost of deployment than desired.
It also reflects the reality that traditional custom build BI delivers to no more than 20% of an organisation, because it is costly and difficult to deploy.
As an application, PerformancePlus is a lower cost solution being a configurable out-of-the-box application.
For the past 3 annual surveys, CIO's have been saying that getting actions to happen as a result of BI data is the biggest challenge. PerformancePlus is an application designed to helps drive action management, supporting a complete plan, do, review approach.
Microsoft clearly continues to be committed to BI being a core component of core technology platforms in MOSS and SQL Server that will enable ISV applications like PerformancePlus to deliver BI at lower cost of ownership.
By combining the features in to SharePoint Server, any PerformancePlus user that already has SharePoint Server Licensing can integrate the features with the PerformancePlus data at no additional Licensing cost.
So, this is all good news to current and future PerformancePlus users.

What is Performance Management and why might I need it?Quite simply, performance management is working out what needs to be achieved at each level of the organisation and making this ALIGNED (the difficult bit) so that all of the operational activity that the business delivers is effective and efficient (and thus has an impact in the way you wanted it to).
"Performance Management is not just about doing things right, it's about doing the right things, right"
Robert Hobbs, CEO, InPhase.
